You Will Be Absolutely Disgusted With Me For Having This Problem

My problem is... what to do in Hawaii with a rambunctious kid?

We're going there on a 10-day vacation. It's going to be cheap. We've been accumulating frequent flyer miles via credit card offers throughout the year and just cashed them in for the airfare. We're staying at my dad's place; he'll be in Japan instead during that time. The biggest expense is going to be the subcompact rental car.

I love this area of Hawaii. Last year, we went on a similar trip, and Guy and I just spent most of the time cooking awesome seafood dinners, reading and going on short tours around the island. This year I plan on making a go at reading 2666. I can also attend a Jodo Shinshu service, which I'm really looking forward to.

But I don't think Sunny is going to be down with any reading-six-hours-a-day schedule. So we're bringing a laptop and a portable DVD player with us and lots of stuff for him to watch. We can go swimming every day for a few hours. But then what?

I've also been looking for some kind of local class or activity for kids so Sunny can have other kids to play with and we can get a few hours of privacy (it's a studio apartment so we'll all be sleeping in the same room).

I'm sure it's going to be absolutely great once we get there. It's just taking a lot more mental effort to plan out.

Sunny is really excited about seeing sea turtles, waterfalls and climbing up a volcano. It's going to be the first time he's ever seen the ocean.

Where, exactly, are you going to be?

Got a ton of stuff to suggest for the Big Island....

I don't want to mention the name in order to avoid certain googlings... but yes, it's on the Big Island and is the town that begins with an H and ends with an O :)

Wow! Your last couple of sentences had some ideas that sounded great to me (besides of course swimming and dining)... driving to local beauty spots, hiking spots, and walking spots, and hiking/walking around here or there (there must be lots of interesting volcanic stuff, and flora and fauna). That will get Sunny all tired out for night-time, too! :)

Also walking around local shopping areas (I think kids like walking around and seeing the different kinds of shops, as long as the parents don't make them wait more than a couple of minutes in one shop) - and throw in plenty of fun little snacks (kids love those) etc. I went to Hawaii 4 times as a child (the last time I was there was at age 12), and still have vivid memories of the smell of the flowers, walking to a restaurant in the evening (with the flowers all around), eating fresh pineapple and having guava juice at breakfast-time, boogie-boarding, visiting the Marriott with its beautiful pool, eating fish and having Shirley Temples, visiting souvenir shops, etc...! The idea of a class/activity sounds great, too. I think kids really just like having a relaxing family time, with various little fun things thrown in, in a beautiful location!

How about a boat ride/ day trip to another island?

Talked to Jim, and outside of swimming, looking for 'stuff' (shells, kukui nuts, rocks) on the beach...he also thinks geckos are GREAT and every kid should chase one...I also thought trips to the national parks, and just hanging out with the kamaainas would be great. Go visit places - even the Wal-Mart (*hisses*) is fun.

You can get SO overbooked so quickly, though - I always did.
